4 Signs It’s Time To Update Your Security System

Security system manufacturers seemingly come up with new products all the time that keeping up with the latest products can easily impact your home budget. While home security is paramount, knowing when to upgrade can help you manage your budget more efficiently. In today’s post, WiHome Integration shares the signs that indicate it’s time to update your home security system.

  1. It still relies on a landline. Security systems that require a hard-wired connection to contact the authorities were ubiquitous when landlines were the norm. Today, landline-based security systems can be easily circumvented, and often creates a false sense of security. Newer alarm systems utilize cellular signals, which are far more difficult to circumvent.
  2. It isn’t compatible with your smart home system. If you’ve had your security system before setting up your smart home system, chances are you’re running these systems separately. This means you probably won’t have access to features like remote lock controls, live video feeds and integration with your other smart devices. This also means you’re probably dealing with the inconvenience of multiple devices. Newer security systems can be integrated into an existing smart home system, which makes them more convenient and more flexible, which can make your home more secure.
  3. It still has low-resolution cameras. Detail is crucial in security footage, especially when you need to identify faces, plate numbers or small objects. Decades ago, HD cameras and digital storage were costly, which necessitated systems with low-resolution videos, but this is not the case today. In fact, upgrading to an HD system — from smart doorbells to motion-activated backyard cameras — is probably one of the least costliest upgrades that you can make.
  4. It doesn’t have fire and carbon monoxide sensors. While old-fashioned smoke detectors are still fairly effective, they only warn the occupants when a fire is already happening, allowing for a timely egress. Today’s security sensors do more than that — they allow the opportunity to put out small fires instead of escaping from a big one. It’s nearly impossible to detect carbon monoxide without a sensor because it’s odorless and colorless, but a CO sensor can, even in small amounts.
